What is VoIP? Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the ability to transmit voice over the Internet to either a receiving computer, telephone or even a mobile phone. Will Femtocell Kill VoIP?

The other day Verizon submitted to the Federal Communications Commission a Femtocell device for possible roll-out in 2009. This had inspired a lively discussion in a tech forum I participate in (BroadBand Reports aka DSL Reports). The general opinion was that femtocell technology will kill VoIP and POTS providers as we know them.

While you're definitely not going to see me arguing that cell phones are not the future - they are - but I still think it is way too soon to predict the demise of Voice over IP - or even POTS for that matter. Sure, femtocells would introduce a new form of competition into the already over-competitive "unlimited calling" market - but femtocells by itself will not kill anything. The "disruptive technology" element is simply not there. Sure, you'll get better quality calls on your cell phone, but it'll still be a cell phone and not a home phone. Saying that femtocells will replace the home phone (or VoIP home phone) is like saying that Hybrid cars will kill the gasoline car market because Hybrids get better mileage and last longer. Sure- they do get better mileage, but it doesn't mean Average Joe is going to leave the TV to look for a Hybrid anytime soon. In a decade - it MIGHT kill the gasoline market - but not anytime soon.

The same could be said for femtocells. Sure- it might destroy the "traditional" VoIP and POTS markets in a decade or two when 100% of users migrate to 100% cellular - but this isn't going to happen tomorrow or even in the next few years. Let's face it - people have been using the home phone service for a very long time. Just because cell companies want to push new technology doesn't mean Aunt Martha is going to give up her precious home phone with its four handsets (because we know you absolutely MUST have a handset in the shower too!). Cell penetration is very high among the younger generations, but don't expect mom to throw POTS out the window just yet.

Now, let's go back to the facts:
* Femtocells benefits the CARRIER far more than it benefits the consumer. If your cell signal at home is good femtocells will make very little difference in your life.
* Femtocells costs too much - at least at this point. Spring Airave for example costs $100 just to buy the device, and then you have to pay $5/month for the "privilege" of saving your cell provider money.
* For urban folks (read: who actually uses cell phones the most), the quality improvement will not be a big draw since they already get a good signal at home typically. The only real draw to the new technology is it's promise of free unlimited calls on your cell phone when home. "Free" however has it's price, namely - $10/month if you're single, $20/month if you use more than one handset in your household. Slap another $5/month or so for USF, taxes, and other random fees.
* At $20/month (assuming you have a single phone), or $30/month (for the whole family) - this poses no risk at all to Voice over IP providers. With the exception of Vonage, most VoIP providers offer far cheaper prices for what would amount to unlimited LD calling. You can find prices as low as $10/month - fees included - for such services via VoIP.
* Sprint's version of "unlimited" includes the US only, while VoIP providers typically throw in Canada for a good measure, and some go as far as including Puerto Rico and some other countries.

Ok, let's step back a bit and compare Femtocells to POTS. Aside from the fact that POTS carriers are typically the same companies who operate your cell phone and have zero interest in competing with themselves - there are still a few things you just can't do with femtocells. Namely- ever try to send fax over VoIP? If you have, you probably know that it is a very daunting task even with the best of settings. Now let's take it a step further and consider trying to fax via your cell phone. Sounds ridiculous? yep, it sure is. Fax and modem over VoIP will probably work well eventually, but I just don't see cell phone manufacturers deploying T.38 fax-ready handsets anytime soon.

The bottom line is:
* Femtocells just won't do some of the things POTS and VoIP can.
* Pricing is, well, just not attractive enough to convince VoIP users to ditch their trusty ATAs.

Femtocell is a nice utopian dream for cell companies, but the meat is just not there, and this isn't going to disrupt the market significantly - it is not a "killer technology".

Over the past 6 years I have been watching the growth of the Internet Based Telephone Industry. With the bursting popularity of Broadband or High Speed Internet like DSL, Cable Modem, or Satellite, telephone service has become a natural addition of applications to run over the Internet.

Many people are not aware that most of the major telephone companies use the Internet to route their long distance calls already and have been for years. They use a protocol called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to offer Voice Over IP (VoIP). This same protocol is available in many of the leading messaging programs like Skype, MSN, AOL, etc ... For many years people have been using this protocol to talk over long distances on their computers using programs called “Softphones”. Softphones are basically computer programs that run on computers and use the sound card in a computer to convert analogue sound, like a voice, to digital packets that can be carried over the Internet. Then some program or device on the other end can decode the packets and play them back. Of course it goes in both directions. Thus you can use it like a telephone.

This same softphone technology is being embedded in small devices called Analog Telephone Adapters or ATAs. These devices have really become popular in the past few years and the quality of the devices have greatly increased. ATAs basically connect to a normal telephone in your house on one side and to the internet on the other. The ATA acts as a gateway translating the sound from the telephone into SIP that goes over the internet and eventually to the phone system where it is decoded and passed on to regular telephones.

Many companies over the past 5 years have tried to make a business plan using ATA devices. The most popular is Vonage. Vonage has spent literally 10s of millions of dollars on advertising and have established a good market. Their latest adds say they are a million customers strong. I can remember when they were just in a few local markets. Many companies have followed their lead like USP Connect, Packet8, Sun Rocket, etc … All these companies have worked out agreements with national and international carriers like ATT, MCI, WorldCom, etc… to pass to them SIP traffic and vice versa. This allows them to offer full residential telephone service over the Internet. The dirty little secret that telephone companies will not tell you is that, it is whole lot cheaper to route with SIP than normal analogue phone systems. Therefore, since these new companies do not have to pay for copper telephone wire in the ground like most telephone companies, or for big analogue based switches, their prices are a lot cheaper. Also, Internet based telephone systems are not taxed like local telephone companies. It is not uncommon to get telephone service from $9.99 for 500 minutes a month to $24.99 for unlimited long distance and local calls. You may have to pay a federal excise tax of $2.00 or so, but not all of the crazy taxes and fees like a company like Qwest would charge. It is impossible to understand the bill most of time with Qwest. Qwest, Verizon, SBC, Sprint and other local traditional telephone companies can charge more than $20 a month in taxes and fees. They advertise a $20.00 a month special but then add $20.00 in taxes and fees which are never explained to you. They also have a nasty habit of selling your telephone numbers to telemarketers that inundate you until you can get on the National Do Not Call List. On top of that they will charge you extra for Long Distance. I am always amazed the way people are brainwashed to think they are getting a good deal at $20.00 a month when in reality it is more like $55-$75 a month with taxes, fees, and extra packages.

The other thing you get with SIP based phones are all the new bells and whistles like Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Voice Mail, and 3 Way calling without additional cost. It is just included in their base packages. International calls are also significantly less expensive as well. It is not uncommon to be able to call Asia for 2 or 3 cents a minute or Europe of 1.5 cents a minute.

Additionally, now it is possible to take an ATA anywhere in the world and call another ATA anywhere in the world on the same network for no long distance cost at all. All you need is a high speed internet access and just plug it in and connect it to a phone. You can get your local calls anywhere. You also can have virtual telephone numbers anywhere. If you live in one state, but would like people in another area to call you at no charge or with a local call, you can get a telephone number from that area and have it virtually routed to you ATA where ever you are. So you can have numbers in CA, NY, FL and WY all ringing the same ATA. You can get virtual 800 numbers. Never have anyone call you collect again. Give you children an 800 number to call you from college or from a payphones where ever they may be. This is really an exciting industry and growing quickly.

Now there are some Cons to this type service. If the power goes out, the ATA turns off. So does your TV, refrigerator, air conditioner and all of your cordless phones in the house anyway. However, since you are not connecting to a computer, it can break without any repercussion on your service. The use of 911 is becoming more available with the advent of E911. Congress has mandated that all VoIP providers now support E911 that acts the same as regular 911. However there are some older areas in the world that are not equipped to receive E911 so the best the provider can do is give you the general emergency assistance number there. If you live in areas like this, use a cell phone for emergencies or keep a local land line for emergencies and dial long distance over SIP. It will still save you hundreds of dollars a year. You also may need a little assistance setting it up if you are technically challenged. However, be rest assured it is a one time setup of plugging the right wires where they go and you are off and going. So don’t be scared if you are over 60 years old. My Magic Jack Review

The other day I was in Best Buy and I noticed the MagicJack product that I'd seen on TV several times. Since I was looking for a VOIP application I decided to give it a try.

What is Magic Jack -- My Review
Magic Jack is a small plastic device a little bit smaller than a credit card that plugs into the USB port on your computer. The purpose of Magic Jack is to place telephone calls through the Internet. There is also a telephone plug on the device. I paid $45 at Best Buy for MagicJack and the first year of service. This includes unlimited domestic calls to any phone all in the one fee.

In addition to the device, the $45 included a free voice mail account and a free US telephone number, which is important since I spend so much time overseas.

Installation
installation was very easy. I plug the device into my computer on at the USB port and the Magic Jack software installed automatically. After a brief update, I plugged my telephone into the plug on th device and it was ready to go. Surprisingly when I picked up the telephone I had a dial tone immediately and was able to place a call.

So does it work
In short yes MagicJack works very well considering the inexpensive cost. My first test call using the telephone through MagicJack resulted in a call that was very clear and easy to understand. The initial call was clearer than most cell phone conversations and nearly to the level of using a landline. I experienced no voice delay as I had with other VO IP applications.

After testing several calls, I've concluded that Magic Jack is at least as good as most cell phone providers. Using the telephone handset I've had great results with the quality of my phone calls. When using a cheap computer headset, the call on my end was clear, but sometimes the other end had static. For best results use Magic Jack with the telephone handset.

For a more difficult task I placed a call overseas. Dialing from the US to an overseas number is not free of charge so I did need to set up an account with Magic Jack and pay for the minutes I used. Magic at rates to most countries is quite reasonable. This call went fairly well, but since the cell phone reception on the other end was for, sometimes it was hard to hear on the call. Surprisingly, there was little delay between speaking and hearing. While overseas, I placed several calls to US telephone numbers. These calls are free of charge on Magic Jack, making this an outstanding bargain for travelers. Most of the calls I placed were very clear although occasionally the person I was talking to would have trouble hearing and a small delay would occasionally occur between speaking and hearing. Overall, the quality is again comparable to the cell phone reception I was getting in the same country.

Conclusion

I am quite please with Magic Jack. The sound quality has ranged from excellent to adequate, the price is amazing, and I've been able to place and receive US calls while I'm overseas. MagicJack will require a broadband connection and your call quality will vary depending on the quality of your Internet connection. Overall I've had no calls were I could not communicate, and many calls where it was almost like being on a landline.

If you're interested in Magic Jack, the one mistake I made was buying it in the store. If purchased online, Magic Jack comes with a 30 day trial that is completely risk-free, and is available online for less than the costs in the store. As long as you have a broadband connection, give Magic Jack to try, it is risk-free and they have proven to be a reliable and quality company.

It seems like you cannot turn around today with finding someone pitching "VOIP phone service" to you. You see it on TV, and even your cable bill and credit card statements have VOIP ads included in them. Why is everyone so excited about VOIP phone service and why is everyone pushing it?

The answer to the question is that everyone is pushing it because it is so much in demand. People are switching to VOIP phone service faster than ever before, and the activations of new VOIP service continue to exceed the activations of new traditional telephone service, even for businesses. So like anything else that is in high demand, VOIP phone service is exactly the same.

But with all the offerings, how do you know which one offers the best service and also offers quality service? The straight answer is that you don't know. VOIP phone service has quality that is equivalent to today's traditional phones. If you are unsure, some VOIP providers have a one month trial so you can try it out before you make any kind of long term commitment.

VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol has been simmering for the past few years. This year the market has heated up. Many large businesses have jumped on the VoIP bandwagon and have realized savings of 50-percent or more off their phone bills. VoIP providers are competing to add to or replace large PBX systems for the corporations and add web conferencing capabilities plus wireless VoIP (wVoIP) over LAN's as well.

Hospitals and other large, fragmented workforces are discovering the value of using wireless VoIP phones to converse with one another quickly and efficiently while in different wings, floors or buildings of a large facility. This kind of wireless VoIP setup can have huge cost savings over cell phones and is more efficient that using pagers.

While business VoIP has caught on in the corporate landscape, residential VoIP is still trying to take hold. This is largely because of a couple of current disadvantages of VoIP. First, not all current VoIP systems have power backups. When the power goes out in a residence, the landline is still operational. Since VoIP works over a high-speed Internet connection, which requires power, if the power goes down, so does the VoIP connection. This will be of concern to many concerned about emergency situations. The good news is that many VoIP hardware providers are starting to deliver systems with power backup to address just this issue.

The second drawback of residential VoIP is that not all current VoIP service providers offer full, 24-7 emergency 911 service. After hour calls in Florida, may be mistakenly rerouted to Idaho for instance. This is also about to change. The Federal Communications Commission has mandated that all phone service providers offer e911 service as standard. According to the FCC, "All interconnected VoIP providers must automatically provide E9-1-1 services to all customers as a standard, mandatory feature without customers having to specifically request this service. VoIP providers may not allow their customers the option to "opt-out" of E9-1-1 service."

Clearly, though, residential VoIP is heading towards direct competition with the local phone companies' coveted landlines. A couple of years ago at a meeting in SBC's Publishing division, one of the executive managers cried, "Landlines, we need to stop losing landlines!" This was in response to cell phone companies taking away market share from the local Baby Bells. Now that VoIP is on the radar, the executive management teams for the local and long-distance phone companies must be huddling in their back offices, trying to figure out how they will stop the bleeding in the years to come.

With VoIP costing far less that traditional local and long-distance phone service and overcoming the last of the residential hurdles, one can be sure that consumers will soon be taking notice. Many will also start wearing t-shirt like "VoIP VIP" and "Got VoIP?" to herald in the new era in telecommunications.

The main advantage of VoIP is that it bypasses traditional circuit switched networks, thereby avoiding the costs of traditional telephone communications. The results of a 2004 survey conducted by the Small Business Administration, provides a reference point for the use of VoIP by small businesses. Of 418 small businesses, 3.3% said that they do use VoIP service in their business. This does not mean that these small businesses have eliminated traditional voice service, but it does mean that VoIP is beginning to find its way into small businesses and, if it continues to grow, it may soon become a significant competitive threat to traditional telephony providers.

Perhaps as a result of this, recently, major companies have reported increases in quality of VOIP technology and announced their intention to provide these services to the mass market. As far as the service quality, in most cases you will barely notice any difference.

In the past, the technique was to try to make data look like voice communications. This would allow data to be sent using the same circuitry. This would explain the annoying sound you would get when using your favorite dial up service. This was referred to as circuit switching.

Today's approach is to try to make voice look like data. Both voice and data can now reside in packetized form on the same network. This technique is referred to as packet switching.

These changes allow telecommunication companies to take advantage of the idle spaces in voice communication. It is estimated that only about 10-25% of the circuit is actually utilized to carry the voice during a typical phone conversation. The rest of the time is taken up with listening for a response, thinking of a response or just breathing between words. This idle capacity encouraged companies to compress voice transmissions, thus using less of the circuit. We know that this approach is more efficient because we have been using it for years with our data networks.

The use of packet switching technology allows us to interleave voice data and even video packets wherever idle spaces occur. This allows for a more efficient and cost effective use of bandwidth. It is this reduced cost and increased efficiency that has driven the VOIP market.

It has been estimated that carriers can get an 11 fold increase of traffic, not to mention revenues, from the lines already existing in their network. This has resulted in a number of companies rushing to market this service to the consumer. The increased competition and reduced cost have resulted in a perfect storm of sorts. In the past few years we have seen long distance rates drop from $.50-$.60 a minute a few years ago to $.05-$.07 today.

So, how do you take advantage of the VOIP phenomena? It's fairly simple. Basically, if you have high-speed internet, you can save a lot of money on your local and long distance telephone service by simply ordering the broadband phone. In most cases, it's an adapter that you need to plug into your high-speed modem, and then plug your phone into that adapter and you should be ready to go (of course, you need to have a monthly service subscription). Many of the features for which your local company charges you extra, such as caller ID, call waiting, voice mail, etc., come at no additional charge with broadband phone.

The above option is great for the very small business person. The firm that has 1-3 employees will find the above option to be adequate. For those firms that have a larger work force this type of service may not adequately fulfill your needs.

Many Business Voice Over IP Providers typically need a minimum of 24 voice channels, which calls for a full T1. Your total monthly price will be the cost of the loop ($500 - $1000 depending on distance from the POP) and LDU (Long Distance Usage). Intrastate, interstate, and international rates vary according to carrier, length of contract, and average call volume. The guidelines below are those that we use at AmtecDigital.com to determine just what type of high speed internet connection is needed to support VOIP applications for a small business. These can be used as a general reference point for your particular application.

For Small Office Calling with less than 8 lines, we recommend you stay with regular switched telephone lines. Though you'll pay your local telephone company $15 to $25 per line, you won't realize any savings using a T1 unless you have 8 lines or more, as T1 loop (fixed) monthly charges are never less than $600/month. This is where the plug and play type of system, in conjunction with a good DSL Service, may best benefit your business.

For Small Offices with 8 to 18 lines, we recommend you install a T1 and use it for BOTH your telephone lines (local and long distance) and your high-speed internet connection. With integrated T1 service, you can mix and match between 24 56k channels, dedicating some of them to handle your voice traffic and the remaining channels for your internet connection.

For Small Offices with 18 to 24 lines, we recommend you install a T1 and use it for your telephone lines only. With a Full-T1 Voice line, you'll be able to support 24 simultaneous phone conversations at once. When considering how many possible extensions a Full-T1 can support, a typical rule of thumb is 4 extensions per channel, yeilding 104 possible extensions.

Typically, once a phone system is set up with more than two or three lines, it will require some type of switching system. Traditionally small businesses have used either a PBX or keyed system to perform this function. When it comes to VOIP phone systems, the system that would perform this type of function is the IP PBX or internet protocol PBX. This is a PBX sytem that is designed to specifically deal with the voice over internet protocol application.
